Sloooow Down and Reflect!

Happy Holidays!

Welcome to the crazy month of December!  Shopping, visiting family, cooking, letters to Santa – all of this while trying to wrap up your year at work or school makes for a very busy season.  Instead of adding to your stress, this month’s behavior will try and relieve some of it!  So kick back, relax, and take some time to yourself to reflect:

Spend a few minutes each week this month taking a walk outside and reflecting on your relationship with the environment.  Then translate your thoughts into a postcard size art piece and send it my way to be included in the book.

The last month of the year is the perfect time to spend some time reflecting on your past year and thinking about the future one.  Your art piece might include reflections on: how your experience trying the monthly behaviors went, what environmental actions you tried this year that you feel made a difference, and what you would like to work on in the future.

Any questions?  Maybe these will help:

What are the environmental benefits to reflection?

We live in a fast-paced culture.  This pace drives our consumption – of water, energy, food, plastic junk, trashy novels, television, you name it.  By taking time to reflect on our actions and how they impact the natural and human environment around us, we will be more prepared to make decisions that actually benefit the environment.  While this behavior has less of a direct impact on the environment (than for example, shorter showers), it is still a very powerful one!

What if I haven’t tried any of the behaviors before this one?  Can I still do this?

Yes! Use this reflection to think about the many ways in which your individual actions impact the environment.  Are you satisfied with their impact? If not, what do you want to change?  I am hoping the reflective art pieces will also provide some suggestions for behaviors you all might want to try in the next several months.

I am not an artist. How can you expect me to do this?

You do not need an MFA to do try this.  Fingerpaintings are welcome. So are photopgraphs, writing, music – whatever you feel comfortable making.

What do you mean by a “postcard size art piece?

I just wanted to provide some manageable guidelines for this piece.  You may literally make a postcard or just complete writings on a piece of paper about the size of a postcard.  If you want to do something bigger or smaller, that is fine too!

How do I send you my piece for inclusion in the book?
